Leonardo da Vinci (1452, Vinci, Florence, Italy - May 2, 1519, Cloux, France), Italian High Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, scientist and inventor whose genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His Last Supper (1497) and Mona Lisa (1506) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of his time.

Leonardo da Vinci was an amazing painter. His paintings contained incredible detail, which made them seem almost real. This detail included things like various shadow effects and textures which gave the works lifelike appearances. Although Leonardo produced a relatively small number of paintings, many of which remained unfinished, he was nevertheless an extraordinarily innovative and influential artist.
