Hero by Night

11:35 PM 0 Comments

Basically this series focused on a young man who inadvertently becomes the successor to a hero long forgotten by his city. The main character, Jack King, discovers the superhero’s old hideout and costume and after trying to sell the stuff on eBay, he attracts long forgotten arch-enemies and is eventually forced to assume the identity of Hero by Night. The writer and artist of the series, DJ Coffman, did an excellent job creating a unique take on the superhero genre, utilizing the internet and Platinum Studios’ web comics site, Drunk Duck. At the end of the mini-series, Jack decided not to be Hero by Night to salvage his personal life.

PVP online comics

Scott Kurtz’s magnum opus about the staff at a gaming magazine combines nearly all the qualities I enjoy in online comics reading: geeks, pop culture references and sarcasm. And most of the strips are now available in printed form too, so you can un-jack your head from the grid for a few moments and actually live in the real world.

Girl Genius - Web Comic

7:23 PM 0 Comments

The setting: In a time when the Industrial Revolution escalated into a full-on war, rival mad scientists, (“Sparks” to be polite), are the ruling powers in most of Europe. Keeping them all in line is Baron Wulfenbach, a particularly powerful and cranky Spark who, when someone starts causing trouble, simply steps in and makes them stop. His capital is the gigantic airship fortress Castle Wulfenbach.

The main character: Agatha Clay was a student at Transylvania Polygnositc University, who had truly rotten luck until she was revealed as a Spark. (Some might argue that this, also, was rotten luck.) She has also recently discovered that she is the last of the famous Heterodyne family—beloved heroes who disappeared under mysterious circumstances many years ago. Folk legend claims that they will someday return, but so far they haven’t managed it.
